LED Light therapy
What is LED light therapy?
LED stands for light-emitting diode, the science & technology originates from NASA & was used in shuttle missions to improve cellular function. In simple terms, our skin has the ability to absorb light energy & use it to stimulate cellular processes. Using light energy skin cells can renew up to 200% faster.
The LED machine emits light which gets absorbed by the skin & acts on the deeper skin cells. Often, we think of light & we usually think of skin ageing and damage. But LED does NOT contain ultraviolet rays. LED light is a broad light treatment that is effective at treating acne, sun damage boosts collagen, speeds up healing & helps to reduce fine lines.
Not all machines are the same, the wavelength or nanometres play a part in the efficiency. It determines the target for the light and the depth of penetration. Red is the most widely used because it penetrates the deepest and therefore can actually treat both ageing and acne.
Red light works by escalating the function of the mitochondria, which increases ATP (adenosine triphosphate) production. The increased storage of ATP is used by skin cells to repair damage & produce more collagen. The red light will also reduce inflammation which can contribute to sensitive & stressed skin.
LED light therapy can be done at home, but the home devices are not as strong & won’t penetrate the skin as deeply. They are great devices to use in addition to clinic treatments & there is some strong evidence to support there use. I am a authorised stockits of Omnulix or LightStim depending on your preferences, please ask if you are interested as I don’t offer online ordering of this.
What happens during treatment?
A quick consultation is required for the first treatment but treatment is quick & non-invasive. Once I have accessed your skin, we will fully cleanse the skin, & a bespoke serum will be used alongside the light therapy. Ideally, if we are using LED as a stand-alone treatment it is best to come to the clinic twice a week for a course of at least 8-10 treatments. The skin needs regular exposure to the light to really see the benefits of LED therapy. SPF will be applied post-treatment.
LED is fantastic as it can also be combined with other treatments. It can be added on post chemical peel, micro-needling, Botox, dermal fillers, skin boosters & facials to calm redness or areas of sensitivity.
A professional-grade FDA approved device LightStim is used, which can treat both the face, neck, and decolletage. Two handheld units are used which will enable in-home treatments and offer targeted treatments.
